Everyone in Hollywood whose anyone have started that as soon as you get big; bam! , you start your own fashion line. Just today in the Washington post I was reading that the Russian gold medalist, Yelena Isinbayeva, has decided that she’s going to start her own fashion line just as soon as she finds a suitable manufacturing company and designer (I assume to fit her taste). But what does she know about fashion? What does she know about all the crummy pattern-making and sewing and tedious steps that it takes just to make a sample garment? Just because she’s a new celebrity does not mean that she knows squat about fashion, so what gives her the right to start her own fashion company?? I feel like it demeans me and every other fashion designer out there who has busted their hump to get through school…and that doesn’t even include trying to find a job in the “real world”! I know personally I would murder for my very own, fresh new fashion company and clothing line. So would every other new and upcoming designer; and yes, the hard work and sacrifice does make the reward that much sweeter in the end. But wouldn’t she be pissed if I put on a pair of running shoes and called myself a gold medalist? I just wish those celebrities and the rich and famous (J. Lo) would take my profession serious. I have worked hard to be where I am at, and frankly it ruffles my feathers that every joe-shmo wants to put their little hat on and call themselves- a fashion designer.
